I specked this unit for my man cave. It has more than enough volume half turned up for my 480 square foot room. The stock speakers do not do the receiver justice. Add some quality 6/8 ohm speakers and it sounds really well for the price. On a budget it is highly recommended. I also looked at the yamaha, onyko, and denon systems and while they do have better speakers $200.00-$250.00 more is not justifiable.
I'm very pleased with this item. It was easy to set up and the sound is quite satisfactory for the price.
The sound is great. But that problem is my fault (boy do kids love iPods). I need to qualify this by saying I have only had it for ~1 month so I can't comment about it's longetivity. It reads all my cds even the strangely formated mix-cds from friends. If you have any Q's I'll respond as quick as I can. I use it to listen to the radio and music in our living/dining/kitchen area and it easily fills that space (no to mention the rest of our relatively small house) with great quality sound. Thankfully my iPod didn't break but sadly the connector on the top of this unit only works now when you hold the ipod back w/ your finger.
The audio in jack works great as well and it has much better sound than my computer or tv speakers. That said, I love this system. Once I fix the connecter it will be perfect again. The remote works well from my kitchen (distance to unit of ~ 12ft). It also read my iTouch (3rd gen) perfectly until my 3yr old decided to pull it off w/o pulling it up first. Hope that helps. Cheers.
a better class of speaker is probably what this really needs. Sony may have tuned out the bass because of the enclosure.
Reciever/CD/MP3 all work well with a minimum of fuss. Purchased to provide better radio/cd listening in a second room.
I do hear the poor density in the enclosure, and the thin board on the back can't be helping. Burning MP3 disks and the shuffle modes provide nice variety to the number of tracks that will fit on a CD.Downfall of the system are the speakers.
With 50w I'm not sure if it's the speaker or the cabinet. I attached a non-powered Cambridge Soundworks woofer, but that helped only slightly.
But for the little high end listening that is done in this room.you get what you pay for.
It took some doing to splice in extra speaker wire to move the speakers up top, plus extend the antenna leads to locate the antennas for good AM/FM reception. We've been using a boombox for radio/cd listening in the kitchen, but it took up a lot of counter space, plus didn't have inputs for iPod/mp3. We like the sound (we don't listen too loud or with a lot of base, so 25x2 W is plenty for us). We were looking for a small unit with separate speakers that we could put on top of our wall cabinets so they would be out of the way. This Sony has everything we wanted at a reasonable price. Programming the radio presets took a little doing but works fine now that it's done. The small size and clean, no-flash appearance sold it for my wife, and we're both happy with the purchase.
